RealPlayer for Android gets an improved interface, landscape mode, and more

The RealPlayer app for Android has gotten a major update, and it's all because of user input! OK, so Real may be playing that angle up a bit in its official blog post, but it's clear from playing with the updated media app that it's taking suggestions and criticism seriously.

In addition to a generally improved and more polished interface, RealPlayer for Android has added a landscape "now playing" mode and playlist support (music only for now). There's also a new homescreen widget that allows you to skip forward or back, pause, and resume playback. Tapping the track information zips you back to the player. You can also now tap and hold a song, video, or image to delete it from your device.

Some features are still missing -- I'd like to be able to share what I'm listening to from the Now Playing view, for example. I'd also appreciate something happening when I tap the search button on my Incredible. With a large media collection on your device, built-in search in RealPlayer would be a major bonus. Real seems determined to deliver an app that will be worth using, so it's likely these features -- and any others suggested by the community -- will arrive in a future update.

With Ubuntu's shift to Qt in 11.10, an attack on the mobile sector must be imminent

Qt, come the end of 2011, is to become a standard component of Ubuntu 11.10. Ubuntu currently, and in the upcoming 11.04 Natty Narwhal distribution, uses Gtk+, a competing toolkit maintained by the GNOME Foundation.

When Canonical announced Ubuntu's shift away from the GNOME desktop manager in 11.04, the switch to Qt was almost a foregone conclusion; GNOME requires Gtk+, but Unity doesn't -- so why stick around? A better question to ask, though, is why Qt?

The odd, but overwhelmingly likely truth seems to be that Ubuntu is moving into the mobile sector. Unity was originally designed as a netbook or small-screen interface; and there's no denying that Unity 2D, without its shiny bells and whistles, is designed for very low-powered devices, like cheap tablets and smartphones.

That's where Qt enters the equation: Qt is the application framework used on Nokia's Symbian and Maemo phones. Qt is also fully cross-platform, with support for Windows, Mac and Linux. With Qt, developers could write a single program for Ubuntu, and have it run on desktops, laptops, tablets, and even smartphones.

But why oh why does Canonical even want to go into the mobile market? Has someone at the top lost their marbles?

138,000 Holocaust-related photos now online, powered by Google and Picasa

Yad Vashem, Israel's official memorial to Holocaust victims, in partnership with Google, has just created what can only be described as the definitive online Holocaust archive. The collection consists of 138,327 images, most of which are photos.

The collection, which represents a few years of full-time work by a handful of Googlers, has been made available just in time for the UN International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is today. If the immense, digitized archive wasn't enough, the Google team went one step further and used OCR to transcribe any text found on the objects, which means that passports, visas and other notes can be searched for using a normal Google search. Google gives the example of searching for rena weiser, which returns her Chilean visa -- and obviously, any families searching for relatives that may have been part of the Holocaust will find this invaluable.

Because the collection seems to be based on Picasa galleries, all of the usual social functionality is built-in. You can comment on photos, and you're encouraged to share stories if you find the photo of someone you know. The only problem is that navigation of the archive seems to be a hit-and-miss affair -- there are just thousands of albums, and they're all unsorted.
